How to Add a Spirometry Reading
A spirometer allows you to monitor your lung function and FEV1 (and peak flow if you have asthma) from your home.
FEV1 stands for “Forced Expiratory Volume in one second”, which means the amount of air you can exhale in one second. This is the standard measurement used to monitor lung function and determine what stage of COPD you have.
Peak flow measures the amount of air that you can quickly exhale, not just in one second. It’s a useful tool for people living with asthma.

How to Use Your Wellinks Spirometer:
- Verify that the batteries for your spirometer are properly installed.
- Open the Wellinks app on your phone.
- Under "Your Latest Readings," tap the "+ Add" button next to Spirometry.
- If you have already added your device, tap the button "Begin Reading."
- If you haven’t already added your device, tap the "Scan for Device" button. The app should take about 10 seconds to find your spirometer.
- Sit down in a comfortable chair, ensuring your feet are flat on the floor, and sit up straight with your chest and back not touching the chair.
- When ready, tap the "Begin Reading" button.
- Bite down on the mouthpiece, wrapping your lips tightly around the white mouthpiece. Inhale deeply and exhale strongly for three seconds. The numbers displayed on your app are your peak flow and FEV1.
- Before your second breath test, take a minute to catch your breath or have a sip of water if needed. When ready, tap "Begin Test 2." Inhale and exhale to register your second number.
- Repeat this process for the third and final breath test. Then, tap the "Confirm" button to register your FEV1 and peak flow numbers.
Recording a Spirometry Reading From a Different Device
If you do not have a SmartOne Spirometer, but have taken a peak flow or FEV1 reading using another device:
- Under "Your Latest Readings," tap the + Add button next to Spirometry.
- Tap "EnterSpirometry manually instead."
- Enter your FEV1 reading and your Peak Flow reading, then tap "Confirm."
- Your FEV1 and/or Peak Flow reading has now been saved.
Trouble Connecting to Bluetooth
If you are having trouble connecting your device, refer to this article for troubleshooting steps.
A Few Important Tips
- You have to take three breath tests for the app to register the highest reading.
- You have two minutes between each of the three breath tests, so take your time to relax! You don’t need to push any buttons in the app between each breath test.
- Remember to take your spirometry readings regularly and consistently, either before or after you take your medication. If you alternate the timing of your spirometry readings, you will get inconsistent results.
- The FEV1 number on your app is displayed as an actual value and not a percentage. The FEV1 value may be different from the PFT in your physician’s office.
- Keep an eye on your trends and talk with your physician about what actions you should take if you see changes in either your FEV1 or peak flow numbers.
