Allergies and Lung Disease: What to Do

If you have lung disease, you know that seasonal allergies can be a real pain. They can make it hard to breathe, and they can make symptoms worse.

But don't worry, you're not alone. A lot of people living with lung disease also have allergies. And there are things you can do to manage both conditions.

Here are some tips:

  • Know your triggers: What allergens trigger your allergies? Once you know what they are, you can start to avoid them. This may mean staying indoors when triggers such as pollen , avoiding certain plants or animals, or using an air purifier in your home.
  • Take your allergy meds: There are over-the-counter and prescription allergy meds that can help to relieve your symptoms. Talk to your doctor about which ones are right for you. Your doctor will also have advice on when to start your allergy medications. Some allergists encourage beginning allergy medications several months before seasonal allergies.
  • Manage your COPD: Make sure you're following your doctor's treatment plan for COPD. This includes taking your medications as prescribed, using your COPD Action Plan, exercising regularly, and quitting smoking if you smoke.
  • Be patient: It may take some time to find the right combination of treatments that work for you. Don't give up if you don't see results immediately.

Here are some additional tips for managing seasonal allergies with lung disease:

  • Stay hydrated: Drinking plenty of fluids can help to thin mucus and make it easier to cough up.
  • Use a humidifier: A humidifier can help to add moisture to the air, which can help to relieve dry, irritated airways.
  • Get enough sleep: When you're well-rested, your body's immune system is better able to fight off infection.
  • Manage stress: Stress can weaken your immune system and make you more susceptible to infection. Find healthy ways to manage stress, such as exercise, relaxation techniques, or spending time with loved ones.
